5 tips you should know when roasting

One of the main parts when preparing food is cooking, which consists in the transformation of the products through heat.

When cooking food, we can give them flavor, transform their appearance and also, in some cases, make them fit for human consumption.

So when cooking, it’s crucial to know different cooking techniques, in order to achieve the desired result in our preparations.

Cooking techniques vary depending on the medium where the food is cooked. So it can be half dry, wet, in a fatty or combined medium, where water and some fatty element are used.

Roasting is one of the most used cooking techniques, consists on the direct or indirect application of heat to food to cook it.

When roasting we can put the food to the heat by placing it in plates, grills, in the oven or even using a spit, to turn the food slowly over the source of heat.

This cooking technique is very versatile, with it we can prepare from delicious vegetables to the most succulent roasts.

Here are some tips to make your roasts perfect:

  • Temperature: If you are going to roast the food using an iron, frying pan or a grill, you must take into account the temperature of the surface. The utensil must be very hot. If you will roast the food on a non-stick surface, you can do without oiling; otherwise it should be slightly oiled.
  • Leave the salt to the end: It’s important to add the salt once you finish roasting your proteins or vegetables, thus preventing them from losing their natural juices during cooking and making food juicy inside.
  • Take care of timing: There are foods that will take less cooking time than others. For example, a fish will take significantly less time to cook than a piece of pork. So you should know the cooking time well of what you will cook, so you get a roast to the point.
  • Selection: There are foods that best emphasize their qualities depending on the technique with which they are cooked. It’s important to take this into account. For example, when roasting vegetables, you must select those that are fleshy, that withstand the heat and whose flavors and textures stand out when roasted.
  • Heat Uniformity: This is very important. You have to take care that the temperature is uniform in the iron when roasting; otherwise you run the risk of your food cooking faster in some parts than the others.
